She broke barriers with powerful, dignified portrayals of Black women in works like *Sounder*, *The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman*, *Roots*, and *The Help*, earning multiple Emmys, a Tony, an honorary Academy Award, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Tyson was most remembered for insisting on roles that portrayed Black life with depth and respect, often turning down parts that trafficked in stereotypes even when she badly needed the work. She continued acting well into her 90s and published her memoir *Just As I Am* at 96, making her quote about age and the gifts of a long life a reflection of her own hard-won wisdom, resilience, and late-career flourishing.
