Keats is basically saying that real beauty doesn’t have an expiration date. It’s not just about looks, either. Those things don’t fade; if anything, they grow richer as you return to them. John Keats (1795–1821) was an English Romantic poet who rose from a modest, often difficult childhood and an early career in medicine to become one of literature’s most beloved voices, all before dying of tuberculosis at just 25. In a few intense years, he wrote many of the language’s finest poems, including the odes “To Autumn,” “Ode to a Nightingale,” and “Ode on a Grecian Urn,” as well as the long poem Endymion, which opens with this famous line about beauty. Keats is most remembered for his lush, sensory language and his belief that beauty, art, and imagination offer a kind of spiritual endurance against the harshness and brevity of life. Knowing that his own time was likely short, his insistence that “a thing of beauty is a joy forever” reflects his hope that beautiful experiences and works of art outlast suffering and “will never pass into nothingness.”
