Lawrence is basically saying that underneath all our quirks, defenses, and messiness, there’s a simple, shared hunger: we all want to feel loved and to matter to someone. It’s not just romantic love, either. It’s the friend who remembers your bad day, the dog that lights up when you walk in, the coworker who actually listens. Even people who act cold or “above it all” usually have that same quiet wish not to be alone in the world.
