Jalal ad-Din Rumi (1207–1273) was a Persian poet, Islamic scholar, and mystic born in present day Afghanistan who later settled in Konya, in modern Turkey. Originally trained as a respected theologian and jurist, his encounter with the wandering dervish Shams of Tabriz sparked a profound spiritual transformation that turned him from sober scholar into ecstatic poet.
