Explanation

Epictetus is reminding us that the people around us quietly shape who we become. Some friends leave us feeling drained, small, or like we have to pretend. Others make us feel steadier, braver, kinder, more like the person we actually want to be. “Keep company” doesn’t mean only being around perfect people; it means paying attention to whose energy influences your choices, confidence, and mood. In real life, that might be the friend who encourages your goals, the coworker who brings out your patience, or the partner who helps you stay honest with yourself. The right people don’t just support you, they gently call your best self to the surface.

About the Author

Epictetus (c. 50–135 CE) was born enslaved in Hierapolis, in present-day Turkey, and later gained his freedom in Rome, where he became one of the great teachers of Stoic philosophy. After Emperor Domitian expelled philosophers from Rome, he founded a school in Nicopolis, Greece, attracting students with his practical wisdom on resilience, self-mastery, and moral character. Though he wrote nothing himself, his student Arrian preserved his teachings in the Discourses and Enchiridion, works that still influence readers today. He is remembered for teaching that while we cannot control events or other people, we can choose our responses and that the company we keep deeply shapes the person we become.
