"Realize that true happiness lies within you. Waste no time and effort searching for peace and contentment and joy in the world outside. Remember that there is no happiness in having or in getting, but only in giving. Reach out. Share. Smile. Hug. Happiness is a perfume you cannot pour on others without getting a few drops on yourself."

Og Mandino is reminding us that happiness isn’t something we finally “win” once life looks perfect. It doesn’t arrive only after the promotion, the bigger house, the right relationship, or the next purchase. Those things can be meaningful, but they can’t carry our inner peace for us. Real happiness grows from how we show up: offering kindness, being generous with our time, making someone feel seen, choosing warmth when it would be easier to stay closed off. We’ve all had those moments when a simple smile, a thoughtful message, or helping someone else somehow lifts our own mood too. That’s the “perfume” he’s talking about: when you spread goodness, some of it naturally stays with you.
