What it means

Lennon’s basically saying, “Yeah, I know my hopes sound idealistic but I’m not crazy for wanting this, and I’m not alone.” It’s about believing that a kinder, more united world is possible, even when reality feels messy and divided. Think about those moments when people show up for each other after a disaster, or when strangers help someone who’s struggling, that’s what “the world living as one” looks like on a small scale. He’s inviting us, gently, to lean into that spirit more often: to assume less, judge less, and look for the common ground we share. It’s not about pretending problems don’t exist; it’s about daring to imagine that, together, we can do better than what we see right now.

About the author

John Lennon

1940 to 1980 · Singer, songwriter and musician

John Lennon was raised largely by his aunt Mimi, who told him he would never make a living playing the guitar. He went on to co-found the Beatles and, with Paul McCartney, wrote many of the songs that made the Liverpool band a worldwide phenomenon. After the Beatles broke up, Lennon built a solo career and campaigned for peace with his wife, artist Yoko Ono. He was shot and killed outside his New York City apartment building in 1980.
