A radio appeal for wartime diaries prompted Anne Frank to begin rewriting her own journal for publication while she was still in hiding. Born in Germany to a Jewish family, she spent more than two years concealed in rooms behind an Amsterdam office during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. After the group was discovered in 1944, she was deported and died in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. Her father Otto, the only one of the eight people in hiding to survive, arranged for her diary to be published in 1947.
