Before becoming a filmmaker, Baz Luhrmann helped create a student play about competitive ballroom dancing that became his first feature film. Released in 1992, Strictly Ballroom launched the Australian director's career and drew on a world he knew through his mother, a ballroom dancing teacher. He became known for exuberant visuals, theatrical staging and modern music in films including Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge! and Elvis. He has also worked in opera and theater, bringing his taste for spectacle to the stage.
