Buddha

According to Buddhist tradition, Siddhartha Gautama left a privileged life and spent years practicing severe austerities before abandoning them. Known as the Buddha, he taught in northern India and became the founding figure of Buddhism. He taught that suffering could be overcome through ethical conduct, mental discipline and insight. Tradition holds that he attained enlightenment while meditating under a tree at Bodh Gaya, and he went on to build a community of monks and nuns.
