At 16, Carly Patterson became the first American woman to win the Olympic gymnastics all-around title at a Games without a boycott. She claimed the gold in Athens in 2004, 20 years after Mary Lou Retton won the title at the boycotted Los Angeles Games. Patterson also took silver medals with the American team and on the balance beam in Athens. A back injury ended her gymnastics career, and she later pursued music, releasing an album in 2009.
