After cancer surgery in 1941, Henri Matisse increasingly worked from a bed or wheelchair, cutting shapes from painted paper to create some of his most exuberant art. Assistants painted the sheets and helped arrange the shapes under his direction. The French artist first became famous as a leader of Fauvism, a movement known for its bold, nonnaturalistic color. A painter, sculptor and printmaker, he also designed the Chapel of the Rosary in Vence, France.
