Henry Ward Beecher

At his Brooklyn church, Henry Ward Beecher held mock slave auctions to raise money to free enslaved people. An American preacher and abolitionist, he led Plymouth Church from 1847 until his death and drew huge crowds with his sermons. He was also the brother of Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of Uncle Tom's Cabin. In 1875, he stood trial after his former friend Theodore Tilton accused him of adultery with Tilton's wife; the jury could not reach a verdict.
