Before becoming a bestselling novelist, Nicholas Sparks sold pharmaceuticals and wrote fiction in his spare time. His first published novel, The Notebook, appeared in 1996 and launched a career built on stories of love and loss. Its success led to a 2004 film adaptation, and several of his other novels also reached the screen, including A Walk to Remember and Dear John. Sparks attended the University of Notre Dame on a track scholarship, but an injury helped turn his attention toward writing.
