Richard M. Nixon

Richard M. Nixon (1913-1994) was born into a modest Quaker family in Yorba Linda, California, served as a Navy officer in World War II, and rose from congressman to senator, vice president, and the 37th president of the United States. His presidency brought major foreign-policy breakthroughs, including opening relations with China, pursuing détente with the Soviet Union, and ending U.S. involvement in Vietnam, while his administration also created the Environmental Protection Agency. Nixon is most remembered, however, for the Watergate scandal, which led him to become the only U.S. president to resign from office. Having endured poverty, wartime service, bitter political defeats, and public disgrace, he understood the idea that pressure and adversity can harden resolve, “the finest steel” forged in “the hottest fire.”
