Theodore Hesburgh

President Richard Nixon fired Theodore Hesburgh from the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights after the priest challenged his administration's civil rights record. A Holy Cross priest, Hesburgh led the University of Notre Dame from 1952 to 1987, helping transform it into a major research university and admitting women as undergraduates in 1972. He served on the civil rights commission for 15 years and stood arm in arm with Martin Luther King Jr. at a 1964 rally in Chicago.
